Covid in India: Why is the government playing down the crisis?

BBC News is saying that as India continues to struggle under the weight of its 2nd virus wave, the government is playing down what's happening on the ground and forcing social media platforms to remove virus critical posts.

One newspaper editor told BBC Newsnight the government has continually played down or hidden the death toll and infection rate.
