Canada: Variants drive 3rd wave across Canada

CBC News shows that a number of provinces are being badly hit by the 3rd wave of the pandemic, and public health officials say highly contagious variants are behind the spike of COVID-19 cases. Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Howard Njoo says Canada can't rely on vaccines alone to get through the current wave.

The Canadian province of Ontario, the country's most populous, will enter another lockdown on the weekend for 28 days, local media reported, as it grapples with rising COVID-19 cases and intensive care hospitalization rates.

Viruses certainly are named based on their genetic structure to facilitate the development of diagnostic tests, vaccines and medicines. Virologists and the wider scientific community do this work, so viruses are named by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV).
