James Webb: Capabilities of the Most Powerful Telescope Ever
The James Webb telescope is an excellent piece of equipment. It's possible to remember when Hubble was "as big as a bus." James Webb Space Telescope is amazing. It's excellent to get a clear image of an Exoplanet with its host star and the first image of Dark Matter/Energy. It would be good to find out if alien life exists. This telescope better not be delayed.
The James Webb Space Telescope is an interesting space telescope that is planned to succeed the Hubble Space Telescope as NASA's flagship astrophysics important mission.
Launch date: March 30, 2021
Cost: 10 billion USD (2016)
Wavelengths: from 0.6 μm (orange); to 28.3 μm (mid-infrared)
Diameter: 6.5 metres (21 ft)
Focal length: 131.4 metres (431 ft)
Dimensions: 20.197 by 14.162 metres (66.26 ft × 46.46 ft) (sunshield)
Work on the telescope sure has been delayed many times. It seems that work on integration and testing of the telescope was suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, adding further delays. Work has resumed, but NASA announced that the launch date has once again been delayed to 31 October 2021. We will see what happens in the future.
ReplyDeleteHere is another interesting thing under construction:
ReplyDeleteLOL The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is an astronomical observatory currently under construction. The project was originally called the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), but the name was shortened in 2017.
